Opening: Social Groups

For as long as there have been schools, there have been social groups. Social groups are groups of people or students that have similar likes or interests. These groups are often associated with certain privileges (benefits) or disadvantages.

Look at the following list of social groups found in schools. Do you identify with one of these groups? Is there another group not listed that you identify with instead?

• athletes
• theater arts
• academics

In your notebook, respond to the following questions:

• Why do you think there are different social groups in a school?
• Choose one group and make a list of advantages (privileges) and disadvantages of being in that group.
• Which group do you think has the most privilege?
• Can anything be done to make all groups equal?
