Opening: The Impacts of Nationalism

Nationalism is a sense of loyalty and devotion that people feel towards a country. It's not just about living in the same place as others, but feeling a sense of identity through a shared culture and history. For example, as Americans we feel a national pride in things like baseball, democracy, and our diversity. But does nationalism always bring countries together?

In order to see how nationalism can have different impacts on countries, view the following images from recent history. After examining the photographs, discuss the questions that follow.
