A common thread among many nationalist movements in the 19th century was that they were a response to European imperialism. Societies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America were all under the threat of political and economic imperialism by Europeans and Americans, who often had great military and technological advantages. In the face of this threat, nationalistic movements rose to maintain cultural traditions, political control, and economic stability.
