Unit 2: How Trade and Travel Changed the World
Lesson F: Renaissance and Reformation
Activity 1: A Classical Rebirth
The Renaissance built upon many accomplishments of the Classical Period. The name "Classical" was applied to the period starting in the 5th century BCE and ending in the 6th century CE due to the significance and lasting effect in the areas of art, architecture, and politics.
Historians refer to the process of naming broad eras or time periods as "periodization." The Classical, Medieval, and Modern Eras have all been created using this process. Although many debate the specific beginning and end of each period due to the many events occurring throughout history, these period names are familiar to historians and students.
In order to get a clearer understanding of periodization, complete the following assignment. Think about the most significant events that have occurred in the world during your lifetime and answer the questions.
Written Activity - Notebook
In your notebook, respond to the following questions:
- What are the most significant events in the world during your lifetime?
- Why do you consider these events to be significant?
- Based on the events you have listed, create a name for this period in history. Use the three periods from historical periodization discussed above as a guide.
