Activity 4: Renaissance Man

Many different artists, scholars, and patrons contributed to the accomplishments of the Renaissance. These persons stand out based on their innovative methods, style, or financial support for advances in art and architecture. One person in particular, Leonardo da Vinci, has been called the first "Renaissance Man" for his innovative contributions to artistic design and humanism in general. A Renaissance man is someone who is accomplished in multiple areas such as the arts and sciences. Although da Vinci's role was more significant in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries, his ideas and inventions soon became well known throughout the early modern world. He is known by many historians as the ideal individual of the Renaissance, excelling in a variety of skills and fields.

The Renaissance encompassed a resurgence of learning based on classical sources. The use of perspective and more realistic depictions were important artistic developments. There were changes in thinking and education and the invention of the printing press allowed these ideas to spread. These ideas of the Renaissance were similar to a political movement occurring simultaneously in Europe during the 14th century.
