Unit 3: Revolutions and Reaction
Lesson C: Impact of the Atlantic Revolutions on Europe
Activity 7: The Holy Alliance
Along with the outcomes from the Congress of Vienna, another series of alliances was also formed. One alliance, the so called Holy Alliance, was a pact between Christian leaders of Russia, Austria, and Prussia. In it, they promised to uphold Christian principles and virtues. A balance of power was maintained, known as the Concert of Europe, because European monarchs worked together to enforce and protect the agreements established in the Congress of Vienna. It was the first attempt in Europe to create a society of governments unified to keep peace and protect the balance of power.
Directions: Read the following excerpt from the Holy Alliance and answer the questions that follow.
