Unit 5: Crisis and Change
Lesson A: Competition Leads to Global Conflict
Activity 3: Long-Term Cause - Alliances
The increased spending on the military in Europe and colonial rivalries led to a system of alliances among the countries and leaders. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, Germany and Austria-Hungary joined forces to prevent a war of revenge by the French. Soon, Italy joined the group, forming the "Triple Alliance." In response, France forged an alliance with Britain and Russia, forming the "Triple Entente."
