Activity 3: The Plantation System of the Americas
In the previous activity you learned about the impact of the Columbian Exchange and Transatlantic slave trade on indigenous populations of the New and Old Worlds. In this activity, you will begin to explore the impact of conquest and colonization on the people of the Americas in more depth, beginning with the plantation system. The plantation system, an agricultural system of forced labor, was transported to the Americas from the Mediterranean and led to a rise in agricultural production in the Americas. The work was done by enslaved Native American populations and African slaves. As you view the following mini lesson, complete the student resource graphic organizer.
