Directions: Analyze the following newspaper headlines from 17^th and 18^th century events in Europe and North America. Similar forces influenced revolutions in Latin America during the 19^th century. See if you can identify the reason for a desire for independence and revolutionary ideals in the events reported by the headlines. Answer the questions that follow as directed by your teacher.

• What are some of the issues that led to the desire for independence?
• What role did Enlightenment ideas play in the political and social changes of the 17^th and 18^th centuries?

Nationalism and revolutionary ideals also played a role in revolutions in the rest of the Americas during the 19^th century. These opportunities occurred in Haiti, Mexico, and throughout South America.
