Opening: M.A.I.N. and the Causes of WWII
You will recall that World War I was largely caused by long-term militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. There was also a specific short-term cause, the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists during a visit to Sarajevo.
The beginning of World War II is also marked by a significant act. The Nazi Germany invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, is the historically noted official beginning of World War II. With this move, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. However, there were a number of long-term historical events, alliances, and unresolved problems among countries that contributed to the outbreak of World War II.
