The lingering effects of World War I and the Great Depression led the people of many countries to look to populist leaders and to be caught up in nationalism. Many of the leaders that emerged in the years before and during World War II were dictators, including the leaders of the three main Axis Powers, the U.S.S.R., and Spain.
