Activity 4: Japan Demonstrates Its Power
With the arrival of Commodore Perry, the security of Japan was challenged. Internal disputes arose over how to deal with this challenge. As a result of these conflicts and external pressures the Tokugawa Shogunate was overthrown. The Meiji Dynasty was restored to power in Japan.
Under the Meiji Restoration, Japan began to redefine itself and exert its power. In the opening activity you examined a timeline of major events in Japanese history. Take a moment to examine major events that took place after Japan opened its ports to the United States.
