Unit 4: Nationalism, Industrialism, and Imperialism

Lesson F: Imperialism and the New World of the Americas

Activity 1: Exploring Latin American History

The term Latin America applies to most of the area in the Americas south of the United States. It includes Mexico and most of the countries in Central and South America. Many geographers include the Caribbean islands, as well.

Latin America is made up of many different countries and has many geographical differences but it is defined as one region because of commonalties in cultural geography. This region has a common history that includes Native American civilizations, European exploration and colonization, revolutions, and wars of independence. At the beginning of the 18th century, all of the Americas were under direct political and military control of European countries. By the beginning of the 20th century, however, almost all of the Americas were independent of direct European control.
