Unit 4: Nationalism, Industrialism, and Imperialism

Lesson F: Imperialism and the New World of the Americas

Activity 3: United States Involvement in Latin America

During the 19th century, the United States increased its involvement in Latin American affairs. The United States took a particular interest in Central America and the Caribbean. First, the United States gained control of all or part of some Caribbean islands after the Spanish-American War. It then, later, sought to secure its economic and military interests around the Panama Canal. In this activity you will examine a series of cartoons depicting American involvement in Latin America and will decide how different people might view the cartoons based upon their own perspectives.
