In the early 19^th century, the harsh realities of industrialism and the revolutionary ideas of the Enlightenment influenced people to begin questioning what they perceived to be the growing inequalities and harsh conditions that surrounded them. Socialism, an ideology that argued in support of industrial workers against their employers, gained popularity among the working class.
