Unit 4: Nationalism, Industrialism, and Imperialism
Lesson H: Social Responses to an Industrialized World
Activity 1: Socialism Emerges
In the early 19th century, the harsh realities of industrialism and the revolutionary ideas of the Enlightenment influenced people to begin questioning what they perceived to be the growing inequalities and harsh conditions that surrounded them. Socialism, an ideology that argued in support of industrial workers against their employers, gained popularity among the working class. The mini-lesson presentation that follows discusses the growth of socialism as a response to the changes of the 19th century.
