capitalism an economic system providing free choice and individual incentive for workers, investors, consumers, and business enterprises
colonization the act of establishing a colony in a territory or settlement by people from another land
communism a political and economic theory in which factors of production are collectively owned
democracy a form of government in which political control is exercised by all people, either directly or through their elected representatives
developed country a place with an economic system built mostly on manufacturing and technology, rather than agriculture (farming); citizens have access to health care; citizens are largely an informed/educated public
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) the monetary value of all goods and services produced in a given year
Holocaust the systematic killing of Jews and other oppressed peoples in Nazi Germany
independence self-reliance, self-rule
nationalism the belief that people who share a common history and culture should be loyal to their country
United Nations (UN) international organization created in 1945 that has 192 members; stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace
Zionism a movement with the goal of creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine that began around 1890
