Now that you have had a chance to review the motives for imperialism, let us learn about how Africa was "divided" among major European powers.

As you have learned, Europeans have had a long history of interacting with Africa. As you can see from this map, Europeans were mainly interested in land along the coast, primarily to use for trade ports and resupply stations for their ships. Prior to the late 19th century, Europeans were slow to claim more than the exterior ports of Africa. By the late 19th century, this changed.
