Activity 3: Consumers and the Media in the 1920s
New technologies in the 1920s allowed media like radio, film, and newspapers to reach an ever-expanding audience. Advertising became an important industry. As prosperity gradually returned to the post-war world, people could afford more consumer goods. Modern conveniences like automobiles, vacuum cleaners, and washing machines – once considered luxuries – became commonplace for middle class citizens. The entertainment industry grew, too, and people purchased radios and visited movie theaters. Advertisers used the new media to reach their consumers.
