The period 1300-1550 witnessed the fall of a mighty empire and rise of a new Chinese Dynasty in East Asia. The fall of the Mongol Yuan Empire and rise of the Ming in China was due to reasons typical of large, diverse areas throughout history. The economic and political challenges created by trade and travel led the early Ming rulers to limit foreign interaction. The cultural achievements of the Ming reflected the accomplishments of the latest line of Chinese dynasties.

Ming China’s interaction with foreign peoples yielded mixed results. Many new goods and ideas benefited Ming society.
