When Latin American countries gained their independence from European countries they experienced political and economic instability. Some countries, such as Mexico, experienced dictatorship and corruption while others prospered. The economic data from this region of the world demonstrates that economic and social inequality continues to exist in Latin America.

Assessment
The majority of Latin America countries began the 19th century as European colonies. Throughout the 19th century most of Latin America gained its political independence. At the dawn of the 20th century, most of Latin America was nonetheless under the economic influence of Western powers. Think about these conditions as you complete the BCR below.

- Latin America: Independent or Dependent
Although independent of colonial rule in the 19th century, Latin America wasn't truly autonomous (free and self-governing) due to the involvement of other countries in its economic and political affairs. Support or refute (disagree) with this statement.
- Describe several examples of the political and economic involvement of other countries in Latin America during this time.
- Analyze the extent to which these countries were truly politically and economically autonomous.
- Include details and examples to support your answer.
