Since the 7th century, Islam grew as a powerful religious and political force. Muslim leaders and their followers created empires in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The culture and commerce of these empires reflected Muslim traditions in combination with other religions and cultures of Afro-Eurasia. The Ottoman Empire reached its height during the 15th and 16th centuries, spreading its control over the Middle East, southeast Europe, and North Africa.

From the 14th through the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire established a large Islamic Empire. Many factors supported the creation of this militarily superior and culturally diverse civilization. This land-based empire dominated events in parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, providing living space for a variety of groups. Think about these examples as you complete the BCR below.
